John and his wife, Jean loved cruising with their family where John could enjoy a cigar while appreciating the vastness of the Caribbean Sea

John’s Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation with the family will be begin at 10:00 a.m.

John H. Ruby, 89, of York and Sun City Center, FL and passed away on March 11, 2026. He was born in York to the late Charles Ruby and Elizabeth May Kaltrieder and raised by Clayton and Elizabeth Kaltrieder.

John began his career with the Columbia Police Dept. in the 1960’s before joining Red Lion Borough Police Department in 1968 where he was named lieutenant in 1970 and promoted to Chief of Police in 1971. He retired as Chief of Police on May 3, 1986. John and his wife, Jean, also owned and operated Jean’s Funnel Cakes from 1972-1998.

He was a member Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, National Fraternal Order of Police, York County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #73, and Red Lion Elks Lodge #1592. John loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. John and Jean loved cruising with their family where John could enjoy a cigar while appreciating the vastness of the Caribbean Sea. The Ruby’s were Florida “snowbirds”, spending decades of winters in the Sunshine State. John was a faithful attendee of New Covenant Community Church in Delta, PA.

John leaves behind his wife of fifty-four years Jean Campbell Ruby; five children Stephen Ruby (Cindy), Joann Ruby Manuel (Charles), Gary Fidler (Christine), Dennis Fidler (Tracy), Laurie Fidler Yeakel; twelve grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren with one more arriving in May. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by three brothers, Gilbert Mundis (Geraldine), Cletus Ruby (Joan), and Blain Ruby (Sue).

John’s Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2026. Visitation with the family is 10:00 a.m. and the service begins at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Dr. Charles Salisbury will preside at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to New Covenant Community Church, 284 Slab Rd, Delta, PA 17314.
