Galen Kyle Tuell, 52, of Columbia passed away on November 1st, 2021. He was born in Columbia to Orlando and Sharyn Tuell and was a lifelong resident of Columbia. Galen attended Lancaster Catholic High School and graduated from Columbia High School. He loved to cook and was known to be a great chef. Galen was beloved by all the children in his neighborhood. He also was an avid Dallas Cowboys and Notre Dame fan. Galen was a lifelong family member at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Columbia. 

Galen leaves behind his parents, Orlando and Sharyn Tuell of Columbia; his companion of seventeen years, Rose Duke of Columbia; his daughter, Brittany Duke-Williams, wife of Jennalee of Shamokin; four grandchildren, Silas, Paityn, Maverick, and River; his brothers, Colby Tuell, Sr., husband of Madeline Millan-Tuell of Marietta, Stephon, husband of Meloni Tuell of Columbia; six nieces and nephews, Marquella Tuell of Mountville, Chantal Tuell of Bowie, MD, Colby, Jr., husband of Olivia Tuell of Mountville, Alexis, wife of Keith Wakefield of Manheim, Tyler Harrison of Mountville, Markis Harrison of Japan; great niece and nephew, Remi Simone Tuell and Savohn Anthony McQueeney both of Mountville; two great uncles, Robert Poindexter, husband of Shirley Proctor of Columbia and Jerry Poindexter, husband of Elaine Brown of Kissimmee, FL; great aunt, Vivian Colon of Columbia; a great host of cousins and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Moses and Lucille P. Abney; his paternal grandmother, Thelma Tuell.

Abram was avid about hunting, crabbing, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors

Services for Abram will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 11th, 2021 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home.

Abram O. Duke, Jr., 83, passed away on Sunday, October 31st, 2021. Born in Washington Boro, he was the son of the late Abram, Sr. and Edith Frey Duke. Abram was the husband for sixty-four years to the late Rose Shultz Duke who preceded him on February 24th, 2021. He served six years with U.S. Marine Corp Reserves and was honorably discharged. Abram was close with his two brothers and lived an active lifestyle. He was avid about hunting, crabbing, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors. He was happily involved in his six children’s lives. Abram will be deeply missed by his family and will remain in their memories for the outstanding man that he was.

Abram is survived by five sons and one daughter, Abram Duke III, Jeffrey Duke, Tony Duke, Timothy Duke, Tracy Duke Nixdorf, and Mitchell Duke. He also had three daughters-in-law, Carol, wife of Tony, Penny, wife of Timothy, and Tammy, wife of Mitchell. Eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive. Abram’s siblings include Dorothy Dinkle, Jane Kauffman, Nancy Baer, Helen Buckmoyer, Henry Duke, Benjamin Duke, Carol Adams, and the late Verna Frey, Lottie Douts, Mary Ellen Schaeffer, and Cathryn Henny.

Services for Abram will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 11th, 2021 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. Melissa was a graduate of Eastern York High School with the Class of 2002. She previously worked with JCPenney, T-Mobile, and most recently New Cumberland Federal Credit Union. Melissa always had a smile on her face and a song in her heart. She was loyal and fiercely independent. Above all, she loved Jesus and expressed that through her genuine love for people. Melissa was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church and attended ladies bible study at Calvary Church in Lancaster.

Melissa leaves behind her parents, Bill and Nancy Rexroad of Lancaster, two brothers, Doug Rexroad of York, Travis Rexroad of Randallstown, MD; maternal grandparents, Paul and Fannie Charles of Lancaster; a loving large family and many friends; her feline friends, Cleo, Tut, and Tuxedo. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, William Rexroad and Vergie Rexroad; her maternal grandmother, Dorothy Charles.

She was employed as a caregiver for Keystone CSG.  Aster was a member of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Landisville.

Surviving is her husband, Jundi; daughter, Divora Bekele of Lancaster; brothers, Woubishet Tolossc of Lititz; Efrem Araya, Wondu Habtie, Alemayehu Demissie, and Yared Habtie all of Ethiopia.

Services for Aster will be held from the Ethiopian Evangelical Church, 175 Church Street, Landisville, PA on Saturday, November 6, 2021 starting at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Demeke Getahun, officiating.  Interment will follow in Landisville Mennonite Cemetery.

Emily Jane Nendza, 94, of Lancaster passed away on November 1st, 2021. She was born in South Fayette Township in Western PA to the late Laurence and Willa Stom. Emily grew up in Bridgeville, PA and following high school she attended art school and was a fashion artist for Gimbels Department Store in Pittsburgh. After moving to Landisville, she became a secretary at Landisville Elementary School until her eventual retirement. Emily’s gift and passion was art, but she also enjoyed gardening and square dancing. She was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church and later the Church of God of Landisville where she was active in all church activities. Emily was a loving mother, foster parent, grandmother and great grandmother.

Emily leaves behind her sons, Robert, husband of Julie Nendza of Catoosa, OK, Scott, husband of Jean Nendza of Lancaster, six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Nendza in 2013; two siblings, Marjorie Gearhart and F. Eugene Stom.

Darren E. Geesey, 46, of Marietta, PA, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2021 after a hard-fought battle with cancer. He was the son of (late) William and Beverly (Perry) Geesey, and the loving companion of Lisa Peters. Darren was a graduate of Elizabethtown High School, and he worked as a project manager for Warfel Construction. 

Darren loved spending time outdoors, especially riding his Harley, but also enjoyed biking, kayaking, hunting, and archery. He was known to be a big goofball and a bit of a Star Wars nerd. He was a fan of the Penn State and Philadelphia Eagles football teams and enjoyed watching stand-up comedy. Above all, Darren was very compassionate, kind, and considerate. He would do absolutely anything for his family, whom he loved beyond words. 

In addition to his mother, Darren is survived by his daughter, Alyssa Garber, of Athens, GA; his son, Bryce Geesey, of Elizabethtown, PA; his brothers, Chris J. Geesey, husband of Gwen L., of Bainbridge, PA; David P. Geesey, husband of Danielle, of Elizabethtown, PA; nieces, Kristin T. and Ashley M. Geesey; and nephews, Gavin and Jack Geesey. He was preceded in death by his father, William Geesey. 

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 4th, 2021 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA 17512. There will be a one-hour visitation prior to the service. Marvin Clayton Burkhart, 93, passed away on October 27th, 2021. He was born December 1, 1927 in West Lampeter Township to the late David B. and Esther A. Burkhart. Preceded in death was his wife of 57 years Dorothy J. and his brother Vernon C. Burkhart. Marvin was WWII veteran and served in the European Theater. He was a member of the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329 and the oldest living member of The Church of God of Landisville. Marvin worked as an area manager for Turkey Hill Mini Markets for 22 years. Prior to that he was an agent with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Marvin enjoyed hunting, golf, fishing, and especially Contract Bridge. He was a Ruby Life Master with the American Contract Bridge League and a member of the Maple Grove Bridge Club. After retirement he worked as a Marketing Director for Superior Sign of Elizabethtown for 14 years.

Marvin is survived by his sister Arlene, wife of the late Ross Kopp of Columbia and children Dawn, wife of Dennis Bentzel of Landisville, Terry, husband of Kathy Burkhart of Elizabethtown, Jana, wife of Jack Tomlinson of Lititz, Carol, wife of Arthur Quinn of Mount Joy, and Tina Duckworth of Manheim. In addition to his children, he is survived by 7 grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren.

Lena P. Olena, 84, of Lancaster passed away on October 23rd, 2021. She was born in Grundy, VA to the late Fred and Sallie Stiltner. Lena was a graduate of Grundy High School with the Class of 1955 where she was a member of the Beta Club and National Honors Society. Following graduation, Lena moved to Lancaster and was an investment banker for many years until her eventual retirement. During her career, she was active in the National Association of Bank Women, the Lancaster County Estate Planning Council, the American Institute of Bankers, and was on the Board of Directors for the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Lancaster County. Lena also was a Den Mother in Boy Scouts and a Girl Scout leader. Most importantly, she adored her family and treasured spending time with them. Lena spent her final years at Luther Care and was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Lena leaves behind her children, Brad, husband of Cindy Olena of Lancaster, T. Shawn, husband of Brenda Olena of Willow Street, Keith, husband of Carol Olena of Rockwood, Melanie, wife of Karl Kuhn of Nottingham, J. Scott, husband of Margaret Olena of Columbia; twelve grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren with one on the way; two sisters, Abby Shultz and Shela McComsey; multiple grand-dogs. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tuffield “Bud” Olena, III in 1992; three siblings, Gaines Stiltner, Brenda Lehman, and Nina Lois Mertz.

Julius Cesaro of Mount Joy

Our wonderful father, husband, grandfather, great grandfather, educator, and musician, Julius passed away peacefully in the Lords arms October 11, 2021. He was 93 years old.

A first generation natural born American, Julius was the son of Italian immigrants, Anthony Cesaro and Frieda Maltese Cesaro.  Julius was an avid classical music lover and took great pride playing oboe in the US Army Orchestra during the Korean War. He also held education in such high regard that he became an accounting teacher and later the chairman of accounting and bookkeeping at Eastern District High School in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City. He was convinced that despite the circumstances surrounding a young person, hard work and education was a transformative force available for each and every person who embraced it.

Julius always made himself available to family and friends for his advice and input for everyday problems or just to talk and laugh.  He was a brilliant man who was thoughtful, caring, and a strong believer in the saving grace of Jesus Christ. A loving, kind soul, having a contagious smile and laugh, he always had a positive outlook despite life’s hardships and difficulties. He was a loving dad who loved his family with all of his heart, and impacted the lives of those who knew him. 

The youngest of four children, family members who preceded in the journey to heaven are; his loving wife of 61 years, Harriett, and siblings, Francis, Peter and Nicholas. Julius is survived by his daughters Kathleen, wife of Robert Shepp, Mount Joy, PA; Jo-Ann, wife of Charles Rey, Massapequa, NY, four grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Deborah Ann Beaston, 68, of Columbia passed away on October 4th, 2021. She was born in Columbia to the late Carl and Elizabeth Torbert and was a lifelong resident of this area. Deborah was a graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School and attended York College. She worked for many years at CoreStates Bank, the Lancaster County Prison, and Fulton Bank, and Dr. Ellenberger before her eventual retirement. Deborah enjoyed spending time with her family, including touring the battlefields of Gettysburg and watching wrestling. She was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and long time member of the Columbia Borough Fire Department (Hambones).

Deborah leaves behind her children, Erik Beaston and Cindy Beaston both of Columbia; her canine companions, Stormy and Sallie; special friends, Diane, wife of Warren Jensen of Bozeman, MT, Rick Warner of Columbia, Walter, husband of Tracy Beaston of Marietta.

 Elizabeth lived and worked as a registered nurse all over the United States, including New York, New Mexico, Colorado, Pennsylvania and California.

Funeral services for Elizabeth will be held privately for her family, with burial at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Elizabeth (Baumann) Marlowe died peacefully in her home in Columbia, Pennsylvania after a very brief illness.

Elizabeth or Betty, as she was known by friends and family, was born in Columbia, PA in 1929. Her family owned Baumann’s garage and restaurant on 3rd St. and Linden Ave. for many years and she helped serve customers there as a teenager.  Elizabeth graduated from Columbia High School and worked at the Hamilton Watch Factory before moving to New York City to study Nursing.  After becoming a Registered Nurse, she went on to obtain her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Hunter College, also in New York City.  Elizabeth loved to travel and could not stay in one place for very long.  She lived and worked as a registered nurse all over the United States, including New York, New Mexico, Colorado, Pennsylvania and California.  It was in San Francisco, California where she met her husband, Peter Marlowe and raised her two children, however, she always returned to Columbia, PA where her beloved parents lived.

Elizabeth is survived by her brother, William F. Baumann of Texas, her daughter, Lisa Marlowe, wife of Robert Beaver of California, her son Matthew Marlowe, of Pennsylvania, and her two grandchildren, Sierra and Noelle Beaver in California.  She is also survived by her beloved nieces and nephews, Ted, Bob, Mike, Diane, and Bonnie, as well as many great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Marlowe, and her siblings, David Baumann, Shirley Diener, and Diane Baumann.  Funeral services for Elizabeth will be held privately for her family, with burial at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens in Columbia. Eileen D. Wood, 58, of Bainbridge passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at her residence. She was the wife of Thomas S. Wood, Jr. with whom she was married 28 years. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Richard D. Flanagan and Margaret Weisser Flanagan.

Eileen attended Shippensburg University and graduated with a bachelor's degree in history and later attended Lebanon Valley College and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration.

Eileen worked as customer service representative for the former Columbia Hospital and most recently Darrenkamps Market in Elizabethtown. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Columbia and also attended, along with her husband, the Encounter Church, Bainbridge. Eileen enjoyed genealogy, crafts, scrapbooking and making custom greeting cards. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church, 121 S. Second St., Columbia, PA 17512 on Saturday, September 25, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. with her brother Rev. Michael Flanagan, celebrant. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Bainbridge Cemetery. There will be no viewing on Saturday; however, family and friends may view at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc. 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The recitation of the Rosary will begin at 7:45 p.m.

Barbara P. Beattie, 83, of Columbia, died of natural causes Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at Penn Medicine LGH. She was married for 16 years to the late Albert S. Beattie, Sr. until his death in 2004. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Dorothy Burke Poindexter.

Barbara was a past employee of Armstrong World Industries and retired as a production worker at Shanks Extracts. Barbara was a Christian that served as a Deacon at Wells of Salvation Ministries. She was infamous for her passion for the Lord, family, cooking and listening to music.

She is survived by sons, Ellis Beattie (Elizabeth), Lancaster; Hodge Beattie, East Petersburg; daughters, Diane Beattie, New Providence; Virginia Beattie, Lancaster; Germaine Hibner (Timothy), York; Mercedes Poindexter, Harrisburg; siblings, Vivian Colon; Robert Poindexter (Shirley); Gerald Poindexter (Elaine); Colleen Gail Rahman; Cornell Galloway and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by Albert S. Beattie, Jr., Lucille Abney, John Poindexter, Leroy Poindexter, Elizabeth Lopez, Charles Poindexter, Norma Freeman, Arthur Poindexter, Richard Poindexter, Malcom Poindexter.

Funeral services will be held at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc. 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Friday, September 24, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Adrian Boxley, officiating. Burial will follow in Habecker Mennonite Cemetery. Family and friends may view on Friday one hour prior to the service. Sandra L. Bink, 76, of Columbia, passed away Saturday, September 11, 2021 at the Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness. She was the wife of Charles Bink, who was her constant companion. Sandra was the daughter of the late James and Teresa Knighton, who she loved with all of her heart and is no doubt now hugging in heaven. She is survived by her sister, Mary Theresa, wife of Robert Kilheffer. Sandra is the mother of Ann Marie, wife of Rich Whitson, and John Curtis Welch, husband of Marlene.

She loved her family and worked hard to provide for her children. Sandra enjoyed music and was well known for singing and dancing along with her favorite songs. She was blessed by God with a common sense beyond any knowledge a degree could have provided. Sandra knew God and talked with Him often. She fully appreciated that we are loved by God, just the sight of St. Anthony with the baby Jesus would bring tears to her eyes, but she also knew that Jesus was Lord and believed in Jesus Christ for salvation and everlasting life. Sandra will be missed greatly by her children, who loved her with all their hearts, and by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were continually reminded by her how much Nanny Bink loved them and prayed for them.

Nancy J. Boswa, 96, of Columbia passed away on Saturday, September 11, 2021. She was the wife of the late Joseph M. Boswa who preceded her in death in 1989. A lifelong Columbia resident, she was the daughter of the late William E. and Elsie Mae Lively Fox.

Nancy was well known throughout Columbia.  For many years she could be found working the meat and candy counters at Lively’s Corner Store, at 5th and Cherry Streets.  An avid walker, Nancy prowled the streets of Columbia in the wee small hours of the morning.  Known for her quick wit and sharp tongue, Nancy was a kind and generous person.  A great cook, she made the best rice pudding and pineapple upside down cake, along with other recipes enjoyed by her family and friends.  She travelled often, having been in all 48 contiguous states.  Many a great memory and good laugh were created with Nancy. 

She was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where she participated in the 300 Club, the Altar Rosary Society and helped to maintain the Saint John Neumann Shrine.

She is survived by her daughter, Anna Gerlitzki; four grandchildren:  Ronald L. Eck, Jr., Jodie Eck, Krista Kruszon and Joseph Gerlitzski; three great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren and sister Janetta, wife of John Wolf, Sr. She also is survived by her beloved Stella. Her daughter, Joanne Eck; granddaughter, Kimberly Ann Eck and siblings, Clifford, Donald and James preceded her in death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St. Columbia PA 17512 on Friday, September 17, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Grab, Celebrant. Burial will follow in Hoy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. Friends may view at the church one hour prior to the mass. Flowers will be accepted. However, if desired, contributions in Nancy’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospitals at www.stjude.org.

Kevin Weaver, 60, of Columbia passed away on September 11th, 2021. He was born in Columbia to the late Paul Weaver and Gayle O’Donnell and was a lifelong resident of this area. Kevin attended Lancaster Catholic High School and proudly served in the U.S. Army. He worked as a painter with Harley Davidson for twenty-six years before his retirement. Kevin was a member of the Foresters’ of America, Columbia Fraternal Association “the Owls”, Hambones Social Club, and the RC 141 Boat Club. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially the Susquehanna River. He loved hunting and fishing, riding his Harley, and visiting the beach with his friend Dave Jud. Kevin also loved dogs and was an avid Green Bay Packers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan.

Kevin leaves behind three children, Jessica Weaver, companion of Jeremy Sipling of Elizabethtown, Michele, wife of Carlos Velez of Lititz, Brandon Weaver, companion of Raquel Miller of Elizabethtown; five grandchildren, Zoe, Xander, Jarin, Brynlee, Braxton; four siblings, Mark, husband of Tina Weaver of York, Brian Weaver of Elizabethtown, Jay Weaver of York, Beth, wife of Stan Haines of York; several nieces and nephews and a large extended family and many friends.

Hazel L. Akers, 78, of York passed away on September 8th, 2021. She was born in Wytheville, VA to the late Hansel, Sr. and Mary Akers. Hazel lived a simple life and had an endearing naivety about her. She enjoyed her sweets, coffee, and her late dog, Mia. Hazel could make you laugh and her sense of humor will be missed by her family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister who adored her family and treasured spending time with them. Hazel also loved the Lord and had been a member of Reamstown Church of God.

James was an avid eagle watcher.

James Walter Abel, 87, of North East, MD and formerly of Wrightsville passed away on September 7th, 2021. He was born in Wrightsville to the late Arthur and Anna Corbin Abel. James was a graduate of the former Wrightsville High School with the Class of 1953. He attended York College and college in Virginia while proudly serving in the U.S. Army. Following his service, James worked for many years at N.C.R. in Mount Joy as a printing analyst and manager of the Quality Department. After he retired, he provided consulting during the transition from N.C.R. to AT&T. While living in Wrightsville, James served as a member and president of Wrightsville Rotary, Riverside Lodge No. 503, and after moving to Maryland he was active with the Shrine in Delaware, New Castle (Nur Shrine Center) and on the board of Chesapeake Isle Civic Organization. James was an avid eagle watcher. He enjoyed the outdoors and boating on the five rivers in Maryland.

James leaves behind his wife of almost 65 years, Dianne Abel of North East, MD; his daughter, Lori Abel of York; his son, Doug, husband of Deb Abel of Lewisberry; his brother, Terry Abel of Wrightsville; numerous grandchildren and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Donald Abel, Richard Abel, Frank Abel, and Barbara Lentz.
