Janice enjoyed music, dancing, bowling, gardening, crafts, and good wine.

Janice M. Meisinger, 84, of Lancaster, PA (formerly of Columbia) died on Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at Conestoga View. Born in Williamsport, PA, she was the daughter of the late Fremont and Lydia Martin. Janice was the loving wife of Frederick F. Meisinger, who died in 2008. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. To her many friends, she was known as Janice, Jaybird, and Red. Janice had a heart of gold and a gift to light up any room she entered with her broad smile and infectious laughter. Given a choice, Janice would have wanted to live forever; she loved life and her family. Her four children were her heart and soul; she will be deeply missed by them.

Janice was a homemaker and worked many years in the mercantile industry. She enjoyed music, dancing, bowling, gardening, crafts, and good wine. She was proud of her German heritage and often spoke of her grandparents’ voyage to America. Janice was baptized in the Lutheran faith and was a member of the Concordia Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The children would like to express their sincere appreciation to the 5th floor nursing staff and aids of Conestoga View who took exceptional and compassionate care of their mother, and due to the pandemic, provided them with the opportunity to Facetime during their mother’s final days.

Janice is survived by her four children, Sharon Meyers, wife of the late Ronald Meyers of Mountville; Susan L. Miltenberger of Landisville; Scott Meisinger, Sr. of Columbia; and Sheila Krow, wife of Brett Krow of Columbia; eight grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Janice was preceded in death by her brother, Fremont (Joe) Martin, Jr.

Arnold Edwards, 68, of Columbia passed away on April 22nd, 2020. He was born in Brownsville to the late Melvin and Sarah Edwards. Arnold was the husband to the late Hannelore Edwards who preceded him in 2012. He proudly served in the United States Army and worked as a laborer for the former Harris-Hub. Arnold enjoyed his church, family, friends, and traveling to the casino. He was a faithful member of Columbia Church of God.

Arnold is survived by his daughter, Susanne, wife of Alan Armold of Columbia; his son, Josef, husband of Rose Gernand of Columbia; six grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Hannelore Inge Edwards.

A private graveside service will be held at Silver Spring Cemetery with military honors. Patricia adored her family and treasured spending time with her grandchildren.

Patricia Ann Fasig, 77 of Columbia passed away on April 21st, 2020. She was born in Columbia to the late Ralph and Martha Jones and was a lifelong resident of this area. Patricia retired from St. Anne’s Retirement Community in 1997 where she was a nurses aide. She was known for her positive attitude and was loved by many. Patricia adored her family and treasured spending time with her grandchildren.

Patricia leaves behind her daughter, April, wife of Leighton McMillan of York; her grandchildren, Alicia Patrick of Riverview, FL and Teirra Preston of York; four brothers and three sisters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Fasig in 2002.

Margaret M. "Peggy" Hartman, 82, of Mount Joy, formerly of Columbia, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2020 under the care of Hospice and Community Care. She was the wife of Edward Hartman with whom she was married on November 2, 1957 while he finished active duty in the U.S.A.F. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late John B. and Mary Reisinger Melbert.

Peggy was a lifelong member of Saint Peter Catholic Church, Columbia, attended Saint Peter Catholic School and graduated in 1955 from Saint Joseph's Academy.

Peggy was employed in sales and administration for over 20 years, being last employed at RWP Wilton Company.

She will always be remembered by her family as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Bret Hartman; Quin, husband of Sharon Hartman; Lea, wife of Byron Espenshade; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, J. Michael, husband of Marcia Melbert; sister, Anne, wife of Jack Fauth; sister, Veronica, "Bonnie" wife of the late Frank Martin. Peggy was preceded in death by her brother, John J. Melbert.

Donald L. "Mopper" Mahan, 73, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2020 at home. He was husband of Elizabeth "Betty" Markley Mahan with whom he was married 52 years. Born in and a lifelong resident of Columbia, he was the son of the late Richard and Dorothy Goldsborough Odenwalt.

Mopper retired from Armstrong World Industries after 25 years of service where he worked in the laboratory. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Ranger. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and spending time at the family camp in Clearfield County. He was also a life member of the Susquehanna Fire & Rescue Company #4 (Hambones), and loved watching old black and white cowboy movies.

He will be remembered by his family as devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife are his children, Tina, wife of James Zarfoss, Jr.; Jesse, husband of Julie Mahan; Dustin Risberg; five grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; sisters, Rose, wife of John Kramer and Barbara Odenwalt. His siblings, Ralph ‘Mop" Mahan husband of Sally (Eckman) Mahan, John "Jack" Mahan husband of Ruth (Swarr) Mahan, and Patricia Greenawalt preceded him in death.

Nancy was employed and enjoyed many years at the Manheim Auto Auction, especially the high line days. An avid reader, she was most content spending time at home with her family and friends.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Peggy Campbell; Michele Arment; Daniel Leas; grandchildren, Amanda, Michael, Justin, Spencer, William, Jordan; sisters, Betty wife of the late Dale Swope; Brenda, wife of Tyrone Yohe; Marg Lake; and Barbara, wife of Jim Warner. She was preceded in death by her son Carl "Butchie" Smith, and siblings Joan Kohler and Donald Tome.

She was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School class of 1953. Joanne worked as a secretary for various local businesses including Hamilton Watch and M&M Mars. Joanne enjoyed shopping downtown and the Central Farmers Market, summer trips to Stone Harbor, N.J. and watching her children and grandchildren play sports. She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Lancaster.

Joanne is survived by Thomas Deery, sons: Tim and Craig, daughters-in-law: Amy and Cindy and grandchildren: Colin and Adelyn and sister, Peggy Kubula of Camp Hill. Joanne was preceded in death by brothers: James, Robert, William and Thomas and a sister: Betty.

Dolores E. Kresge, 86, formerly of 803 Locust St., Columbia, PA died on Thursday, April 16, 2020 at St. Anne's Retirement Community. The family would like to express their deepest thanks to the Staff of St. Anne's Retirement Community for the excellent and professional care given to Dolores while she was in their care. She was the wife of the late Ernest H. Kresge, Jr. who preceded her in death on August 12, 2019. Born in Columbia she was the daughter of the late Daniel W. and Ethel Courtney Leber.

Dolores was employed at the Columbia United Telephone Co., St. Anne's Retirement Community, and retired as a Mail Room Clerk for Donegal Insurance Co. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Columbia.

Surviving are daughters: Karen wife of Michael Kuhn and Kathleen Groff both of Columbia, PA and a son: Ernest husband of Heidi Kresge of Bainbridge, PA, 4 grandchildren: Kristine, Shannon, Michael, and Brian, and 6 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a grandson: Nathan Harrison and a brother: Daniel W. Leber.

Herbert D. "Cubb" Spiese, 87, a fixture in the Columbia community, passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 at the Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Albert L., Sr. and Hilda Ember Spiese.

After attending Columbia High School, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After 35 years of service from Armstrong World Industries, Cubb devoted his time in efforts to improve Columbia. After nine years of tireless communication with the PA Department of Transportation, the Lancaster Avenue bridge crossing the Shawnee Run Creek was repaired and later dedicated in his honor and named for him.

In addition, Cubb supported and volunteered for the Columbia K-9 project, Columbia Food Bank and the Korean War Veterans Association. He was unapologetic in his enthusiasm of Columbia.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hamilton Arms for the care given to Cubb during his three year stay there.

Surviving are his brothers, Richard Spiese; Patrick Q. husband of Kaye Spiese; sisters, Geraldine E. Spiese; Rose M. Spiese and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Hilda, Albert, Nathan, Kenneth, John, Grace, James and Gwen.

Due to current health guidelines, a private graveside service will be held with military honors in Silver Spring Cemetery. A public memorial service is being planned for a later date. If desired, donations in Cubb's memory may be made to the Columbia Food Bank, PO Box 96, Columbia, PA 17512.

Jessel had a kind and sweet side and tried to help people in need.

Jessel A. Schierl, 43, of York entered into rest on Friday, April 10, 2020.   He is now at peace and in the loving hands of God.

As a youth, Jessel liked to play baseball and he was a very good player.  He loved skateboarding and hanging out with his friends.  He enjoyed boating activities, both waterskiing and tubing and spent many happy hours on the water with family and friends.    

Jessel got great satisfaction from doing large cleanup jobs and would work diligently making areas orderly and beautiful.  He had a “get er done” attitude tackling these projects.  Jessel had a flair for decorating.  He could take giveaways and free items to make a room look really nice and homey. 

He had a kind and sweet side and tried to help people in need.  His sense of humor often came in handy with these endeavors.  He could really make you belly laugh.  He found comfort in long, serene walks and was very physically fit. 

He is survived by his parents, Gregg and Rose Schierl, his children, Noah Bliss, Gabriel Avery King, Jewelz’ Avery Marie and Jayla Lynn Rose Crane, his sisters, Melissa Schierl and Rebecca Hollingsworth, his aunts, uncles, and cousins all who showed him much love throughout the years. Jessel was preceded in death by his father, Jessel R. Hollingsworth.

Luke W. Martin, 87, of Lancaster, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Woodcrest Villa on Thursday, April 16, 2020.  He was the son of the late Christian K. & Grace E. Weaver Martin.

Surviving are two sons, Phillip C. husband of Cheryl Martin, Columbia, and Paul C. Martin husband of Rosie Newton, Trumansburg, NY; and a daughter, Patricia A., wife of Thomas D. Levosky, Elizabethtown.  Also eight grandchildren: Tamara, Andrew, Thomas, Alison, Trevor, Yheva, Saul, and Alec. Siblings: brothers Harold W. Martin, John Charles Martin, Galen W. Martin, Clyde W. Martin, Lloyd W. Martin, Willis W. Martin, Sanford W. Martin, and Clair W. Martin; and sister Laura Ruth Hertle.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn L. (Christ) Martin, brother Roy W. Martin, sisters Pearl W. Brazier, Florence Faus and infant sister Esther Martin.

Luke and Kathryn celebrated their 60 year wedding anniversary on February 27, 2020.  Kathryn passed away four days before Luke on April 12, 2020 at the Mennonite Home. Luke is remembered for his dedication to church, family and hard work.  He spent fifty years driving trucks for Metzler, W.H. Johns, Atkinson, and after retirement, Crowe Transportation. His last job was at the Manheim Auto Auction.  For many years he was a Deacon at Faith Calvary Church, Lancaster. He loved his family, church and NASCAR. He was frequently seen in his Mark Martin shirt and cap.

Kathryn is remembered as being sweet, thoughtful and kind. She chose forgiveness over revenge, love over hate, faith over fear and family over all else. There was always mail, candy, in her mailbox for the grandchildren. They looked for it even into their 20's and 30's.

Madeline Valentin, 49, of Columbia passed away on March 21, 2020. She was born in Rio Grande, PR to the late Nicholas and Higinia Ortiz Velasquez and grew up in Puerto Rico before moving to this area. For many years she worked many jobs, from bus driving to personal care assistant. Madeline was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter, and sister who treasured spending time with her family.

Madeline leaves behind her children, David, husband of Paige Perales of Columbia, Kervin Perales, and Ashley Perales; her granddaughter Charlotte Mae Perales; many siblings, nieces and nephews, and a large extended family.

Carol Aurand, 88, formerly of Bloomsburg, PA, of 1520 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, died on March 21, 2020 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy, PA after battling ovarian cancer for the past year. She was the daughter of the late Dr. Charles and Edith (Watts) Lyons. Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Donald L. Aurand, on April 4, 2010.

She graduated from Millville High School in 1949 and from Thompson Business College, Harrisburg, PA. Carol was employed at Evangelical Community Hospital as a Medical Secretary when her husband served in the U.S Army. She followed him to Barstow, California where she worked at the Marine Corps Supply Center.

Carol was an active member of the Millville Christian Church for 65 years. She served as President of the Christian Women Fellowship, and in her earlier years, taught Sunday School. After moving to Bloomsburg, she attended the First English Baptist Church.

Carol and her late husband were members of the Danjo Wheelers Square Dance Club in Danville for 24 years, and traveled throughout the United States to attend National Square Dancing Conventions. They danced with the Nugget Squares in Fairbanks, Alaska. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and had the privilege of visiting all 50 states, Europe, South America, Israel, and Egypt. She enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and mah jongg. She also enjoyed hosting parties in their Millville home.

Carol is survived by a son, Joel Aurand and his wife Gail, St. Louis, MO; twin daughters, Margo and her husband Dr. Willard Kile, Bloomsburg, PA and Marilyn Aurand, Landisville, PA. Four granddaughters, Kelsey, Bethany, Charis,and Hope. Four great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Carol is survived by a sister, Yvonne Ryder, McKinney, Texas and one brother, Jon Lyons, Lancaster.

Daune M. Ortman, 79, of Willow Street, passed away on Monday, March 23, 2020. She was the wife of the late Donald Ortman, who preceded her in death in 1994. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Brad Oberdorff. Born in Lower Windsor Township, Daune was the daughter of the late Charles and Josephine (Silar) Oberdorff.

Daune retired from Kahn Lucas after nearly 45 years where she was employed as a payroll clerk. Following her retirement, she worked as a server at Willow Valley, where she also volunteered. Daune was a devoted member of the Conestoga United Methodist Church. Daune enjoyed gardening, bird watching, taking walks, visiting the mountains with her family, and spending time with her cherished grandchildren.

Daune is survived by her children, Terri Ortman, of Columbia; Donnie, husband of Natalie Orman, of New Providence; Chip, husband of Donna Ortman, of Columbia; Chad, husband of Corinne Ortman, of Willow Street; her grandchildren, Corey, Lisa, Nick, Kirsten, Tara, Cheyenne, and Cole; her great grandchildren, Arlo, Logan, and Ella; her sisters, Gloria Millar, of Columbia; and Tina, wife of Jimmy Schopf, of Long Level; along with many nieces and nephews, and a large extended family.

Jean graduated from Penn Manor High School and was employed by Time Warner Cable where she retired after many years of service. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Columbia.

Jean enjoyed crafts, yard sales, jewelry, working in her flower beds and most of all being with her family.

In addition to her husband are her children, Paula Baum; Matthew, husband of Deb Fry; Bethany, wife of Barry Lyter; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and sister, Christine, wife of the late Randy Gottschall. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Janice Smith and Judith Anderson.

Due to CDC recommendations and a concern for public health, Jean's funeral service will be held privately for the family. After the service she will be laid to rest in the Creswell Cemetery. Pamela A. O'Brien, 79, of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, March 19, 2020. She was the wife of the late Jack E. O'Brien who preceded her in death in 2004. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Phyllis Johnson Miltenberger.

A Columbia High School graduate, Class of 1959, Pam was employed for many years at the Susquehanna Cut Glass Factory where she worked in many capacities including glass cutting, packaging, and manager. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Columbia, and enjoyed scrapbooking as a hobby.

She is survived by her son, Curt, husband of Diane O'Brien; daughter, Jody, wife of Kris Larsen; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Aracelis Torres O'Brien, wife of the late Jack E.S. O'Brien.

A graveside service will be held in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. If desired, donations in Pam's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.

He was a world class softball player and a member of the ASA Pennsylvania Softball Hall of Fame. When not playing softball, John was bowling.

Due to world conditions, a celebration of John's life will be held at a later date and will be announced by his family.

John M. Erney, Jr., 85, of Columbia passed away on March 18th, 2020. He was born in York to the late John, Sr. and Elsie Shue Erney and was a lifelong resident of this area. John was a graduate of York High School with the Class of 1953 and worked at Caterpillar for thirty-five years before his retirement.

He was a world class softball player and a member of the ASA Pennsylvania Softball Hall of Fame. When not playing softball, John was bowling. He was a member of the 55 plus Susquehanna Senior League and the 2007 recipient of the Jimmy Sheckard Award. When not playing sports, you could find John in his garage working on his many woodworking projects. He adored his family and treasured spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John's late wife, Patricia, was the love of his life. She preceded him in death in 2013. At the time of her passing, they had been married 59 years.

John leaves behind his children: Timothy, husband of Gloria Erney of Pittsburgh, Jay, husband of Vicki Erney of Dillsburg, Brenda, wife of Bob Kopf of Lancaster, Sue Wallace of Mount Joy, Robin, wife of Warren Yohe of Columbia; nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; his sister, Lois Naylor of Dover, PA, and his brother, Donald Erney of Bradenton, FL. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Erney and Marlin Erney and his sister, Grace Brown.

Julie Ann (Tillman) Moore, 58, passed away on Saturday, March 14th, 2020. She was born in Columbia to Norman and Margaret (Jacobs) Tillman and was a lifelong resident of Columbia. Julie was a 1979 graduate of Columbia High School and previously worked at QVC. She cherished spending time with her family, enjoyed cooking and baking, and is remembered by her family as being crafty.  

Julie is survived by her parents; her children: Joshua Tillman (Dover), and Andrew Moore, husband of Morgan (Columbia); her sisters, Robin, wife of Kevin Wallace (Manheim), and Paula Amsley, fiancé of Kristine Barshinger (Mount Wolf); her niece, Amanda Shenberger, companion of Jeff Grumley (Columbia); nephews, Kevin Wallace, Jr., husband of Heather (Rheems), and Chancellor Boyd, companion of Hannah Buchter (Columbia) and her beloved grandchildren; Trenton and Trinity Moore. Julie is also survived by her beloved feline friend, Fraidy. She was preceded in death by her sister in law, Crystal Amsley, and her nephew, Eric Wallace.
