Kenneth R. Moore, Sr., 81 of Washington Boro passed away on December 19, 2023. He was born in Columbia to the late John and Helen Moore and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Ken attended Penn Manor High School and proudly served in the National Guard. He worked for over forty years with the Burnham Corporation as a sheet metal mechanic before his retirement. Ken was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He was also an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan. Ken was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother who adored his family, especially his grandkids.

Ken leaves behind his wife of over fifty-seven years Betty Moore of Washington Boro; his son, Ken Jr., husband of Peggy Moore of Columbia; three grandchildren, Ashley, wife of Brandon Stricker of Marietta, Zac, husband of Ashley Horst of York, Ally Horst of Naples, FL; four great grandchildren, Brantly, Blake, Gavin, and Cora; two sisters, Edith Tangert of Wrightsville, Helen, wife of Kim Veno of Sanbornville, NH. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers.

A celebration and time of remembrance for Ken will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Washington Boro United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 1964 Water St, Washington Boro, PA 17582. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Washington Boro U.M.C. Building Fund.

Born on December 3, 1947. Lucy dedicated her days to selflessly bringing smiles to everyone she encountered. Her genuine spirit illuminated the hearts of others with its contagious joy.

As a devoted wife, mother, grandma, and great-grandma she poured boundless love and wisdom into the lives of her family & others. Her gentle guidance and constant support formed the foundation upon which countless memories were built.

Lucy’s spirit of resilience was unmatched; she embraced life with an unyielding determination to find joy in every circumstance. Her unwavering optimism inspired others to see the beauty in even the simplest moments.

Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched with her selfless love and constant positivity. Mary Lucia Stephens will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Robert A. Kling, 75 of York, formerly of Columbia passed away on Friday, December 15, 2023. Born in York, he was the son of the late Charles S. Sr. and Catherin Smith Kling.

A graduate of Eastern High School, he was employed at Burnham Corp., Lancaster. For many years, Bob coached little league baseball for the Columbia Boys Athletic Association. An avid outdoorsman and fisherman, he was a member of the Yorkanna Game and Gunning Club. In addition, he was an ardent fan of the Phillies and Eagles.

He will be missed by his daughter, Wendy L. Shoster; four grandchildren, Benjamin Nutter (Tovah), Richie Eppley (Emily), Kara Eiceman (Joshua), Kalli Shoster (Scott Aschenbrenner); great grandchildren, Ava, Max, Mya and Kynsey; siblings, Trina Kling and Charles S. Kling, Jr. He was preceded in death by his brother and best friend, Michael Kling.

James “Jim” Robert Haug, 72, of Columbia passed away, surrounded by his family on December 10, 2023. He was born in Columbia to the late Carl and Anna Haug and was a lifelong resident of Columbia.

Jim was a graduate of Columbia High School with the Class of 1969 and proudly served in the United States Navy. Following his service, he worked as a letter carrier with the Columbia Post Office until his retirement. He then worked for a number of years with the Lancaster Newspaper. Jim was a member of Columbia VFW Post #2435 and also a faithful member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting and visiting his cabin in Potter County. Jim also was an avid photographer and founded the Facebook group “What's Happening in Columbia, Pa. and Surrounding Area”. He was well known for his photos of the Veterans Memorial Bridge as well as many photos of Columbia landmarks. Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, and uncle who adored his family and treasured spending time with them.

Jim leaves behind his wife of fifty-one years Paula Haug of Columbia; four daughters, Patty Haug of Columbia, Jenny, wife of Jim Jones of Columbia, Jessy Haug, fiancée of Ryan Einzig of Elizabethtown, Pammy Haug of Columbia; eleven grandchildren, Tonya, Hunter, Ava, Cash, Gregory, Jerrika, Jaydin, Damen, Veronica, Azzy, and Gabby; five great grandchildren, Evelyn, Emma, Alexandra, Addilyn, and Ayden; seven sisters, Carla Lindenberger, Judy Clark, Donna Haug, Cathy Berdiner, Sue Wieler, Sharon Herr, and Jody Croft; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Paul is survived by his brother Alan C. Schlotthauer; two nephews Matthew husband of Amanda Schlotthauer; Joseph husband of Carin Schlotthauer; two great-nieces and three great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Earl C. Schlotthauer.

Kenneth L. Sheckard, 80, of Columbia, went HOME to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on November 17, 2023 at Lancaster General Hospital.  He was the husband of Carole Clark Sheckard to whom he was married for 52 years.  Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Wilmer and Mary Carson Sheckard.

Ken proudly served his country in the United States Army. He graduated from Columbia High School with the Class of 1961.  He retired as a payroll supervisor for Anvil International.  Ken was very active in sports and coached baseball for many years.  He served on the Board of Lancaster Midget Baseball League where he was former President and Vice President.  Also, Ken attended Manor Church, Lancaster.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Seth husband of Elizabeth Sheckard, twins, Ann Sheckard and Mark husband of Nicole Sheckard; grandchildren, Derek Sheckard and his fiancé Alicia Waltemyer, Andrew and Erin Sheckard; great grandchildren, Raelynn and Brynlee Sheckard and a sister, Sandra Hilt.

Funeral services will be held for Ken on Monday, November 27, 2023 at 2:00 pm from Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster, PA with Rev. Dan Sigman and Seth Sheckard, officiating. David Leon Heffner, 68, of Wrightsville passed away on November 13, 2023. He was born in York to Betty and the late Alvin (Jack) Heffner.

Dave was a graduate of Red Lion High School with the Class of 1972. In his younger years he was a hunter and fisherman who loved visiting the mountains. He was also active in Boy Scouts with Troop 42. Dave worked for many years with Harley Davidson until his eventual retirement. He and his wife enjoyed spending time with their son, Nate, by attending “steamups”, which were meetups to ride and operate miniature steam engines. Dave and Nate also enjoyed helping each other with various projects in their workshop. After Dave became ill, he loved sitting on his back deck on a sunny day with the company of family and friends.

Dave leaves behind his wife of forty-one years Sherryl Heffner of Wrightsville; his son, Nate Heffner of Wrightsville; his mother, Betty Heffner of Brogue; two siblings, Scott, husband of Jeanne Heffner of Brogue, Lori, wife of Kent Heffner of Brogue; a sister-in-law, Pat Heffner of York; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother Steven Heffner.

Patrick M. Donan, age 59, of Columbia passed away peacefully on Monday, November 6th 2023 at the Hospice and Community Care Center in Mt. Joy. Born in Lancaster, PA on April 18th, 1964 he was the son of the late Thomas and Barbara (Aston) Donan.

Patrick was a 1982 graduate of Columbia High School. He continued his education at Millersville University graduating in 1985 and received his law degree from Temple Law School in 1988. He went on to have a successful 35-year career as a Workman’s Compensation attorney and partner in the Philadelphia area at Steiner, Segel, Muller and Donan. Patrick was a member of the American Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Association and Philadelphia Bar Association.

In June of 2023, he was awarded the prestigious Martha Hampton award by his peers in the Philadelphia Workman’s Compensation section for his compassion and dedication to his clients, professionalism, scholarship, and goodwill with his peers.

Patrick was a faithful and longtime member of the Columbia Church of God. He was a man of great faith, values and generosity. Outside of work he enjoyed spending time and visiting with his family, relatives and friends, going for walks and to the beach, vacationing on his annual road trip in December, and gathering people together for lively board games on the weekends. He will be remembered as a loving, caring, and compassionate person and a friend and mentor to many.

Patrick is survived by his sister Mary Donan (Columbia, PA), niece Kelly (Drew) Rochotte, (Ohio) nephew Donald (Kara) Thompson (Ohio), sister-in law Debra Donan, nephews Thomas Donan, Garry (Cynthia) Donan, and niece Katie (Denny) Halso (all of NC). In addition, he is survived by 8 grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Terry (Donald) Thompson and his brother Thomas Donan.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lancaster General Hospital, Hospice and Community Care Center, and his medical team at PennMed in Philadelphia for their care and support.

A memorial service for Patrick will be held Saturday, November 18, 2023 at the Columbia United Methodist Church, 510 Walnut Street, Columbia, PA with Rev. Fred Thomas, officiating. Rose Marie Spiese, age 87, expired on September 7, 2023 at the Lancaster Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lancaster, PA

where she was a resident.  She was born on November 29, 1935, the tenth of 13 children born to Albert L. Spiese, Jr. and Hilda Ember Spiese of Columbia, PA.  She is survived by one brother, Richard D. Spiese of Sheffield, CA, and one sister, Geraldine E. Spiese of Telford, PA, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Rose was a 1953 graduate of Columbia High School.  She earned a BA degree in education from Millersville State College and a Master’s degree from Temple University.  She taught in Lancaster City Schools for many years until her retirement, following which she continued as a substitute teacher.  Her students found her to be faithful, kind, caring, generous, trustworthy, and fun-loving.    She leaves behind a legacy of many students whose stories demonstrate these characteristics.  She was an avid reader and especially enjoyed mystery novels.  She thoroughly enjoyed assisting with theatrical productions at McCaskey High School whether dealing with tickets, helping with costuming, painting sets, and helping the actors in learning their lines.  All of these things after a full day of teaching.

A memorial service for Rose will be held at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc. 519 Walnut Street, Columbia PA, on November 29, 2023 at 2:00 p.m.  Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment in Silver Spring Cemetery. Robert M. McClung, 79, of Columbia went to be with his Lord and Savior at 3:00 a.m. with the time change on November 5, 2023. He was born in Newark, OH to the late Emory and Alma McClung.

Robert was a graduate of McCaskey High School and proudly served in United States Navy from 1963 -1967 aboard the U.S.S. Pine Island. During the Vietnam War he was exposed to Agent Orange. Following his service, Robert worked with the former Bolova Tech until his eventual retirement. For three years he was part time maintenance with St. Anne’s Retirement Community.

He was a loving family man who adored his grandchildren and treasured spending time with them. Robert was a faithful member of Hope Born in Christ Church.

Robert leaves behind his wife of almost twelve years Bonnie McClung of Columbia; three daughters, Michele, wife of Alex Medina of York, Alysia Dickens of Columbia, Krystal, wife of Mark Lane of York; three grandchildren, Kaliope, Benjamin, and Nevan; one great granddaughter, ZelleMae; two siblings, Bud, husband of Bonnie Mason of Mingo Junction, OH, Donna, wife of Richard Wade of Ivanhoe, NC; sister-in-law, Shirley McClung of Lancaster; numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Carol McClung; his son, Nathan McClung; three siblings, Bill McClung, Doris Gasbarro, and Betty Shannon.

Russell Alan Miller, 79 formerly of Columbia, passed November 3, 2023 at Oak Leaf Manor North, Landisville PA. He was the loving husband of Mary Lynne Miller with whom he celebrated 54 years of marriage in October. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late J. Russell and Helen B. Kauffman Miller.

Russ was a 1961 graduate of Hempfield High School, served six years in the PA National Guard and enjoyed a successful career of over forty years in sales and customer service. He was a lifelong member of the Kinderhook E.C. Church where he attended faithfully. Russ had a love of music and cars along with the uncanny ability to name any song playing as well as the years it was released.

A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Russ is survived by his wife Mary Lynne; daughter Amy wife of Matthew Rutter; two grandchildren Samantha wife of Garrett Germani; Jordan Rutter and great-grandchildren Harper and Hazel Germani.

Eugene Gilbert, 63, transitioned from Earth to his Heavenly home on November 1, 2023 following a courageous battle with cancer.  He was born in 1959 in Lancaster, PA to the late L.C. and Ruth Gilbert. Eugene was a former resident of Columbia. He was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Columbia. Those who knew him called him, Gene.  He did lawn care services and handy work in the Columbia area.

Gene will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Gene is survived by two daughters, Destiny Gilbert of Manheim Township, PA and Jada Shirley of Columbia, PA; one son, Eli “Lottie” Gilbert of York, PA; 10 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews and loving friends; brothers, Luke Gilbert, Warren Gilbert and Bruce Gilbert; sisters, Ruth Mae Colon, Christine Gilbert, Joyce Gilbert all of Columbia, PA and Brenda Graham of Kannapolis, NC.  He was preceded in death by his parents L.C. Gilbert and Ruth; brother, Tommy Jankans and sister, Rosalie Gilbert.

 A celebration of Gene’s life will be held on Saturday, November 18th, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sixth & Locust Streets, Columbia with Rev. Dr. Patricia S. McAllister, officiating. All are welcome.

James Kaufhold, Jr., 87, of Columbia, passed away on Sunday, October 29th, 2023. He was born in Columbia to the late James, Sr. and Hazel Kaufhold. He was a life time resident of Columbia.

He worked for Nissan Foods as an accountant where he retired. After retirement, he worked part-time as a custodian at the Columbia School District.  James was a devoted member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Catholic War Vets. He served in the United States Navy and the National Guards. He loved watching METV and listening to Ana Cani sing from the Lawrence Welk show. He loved to sing in Spanish, German and Latin.

James enjoyed going to the woods for many get togethers with his family and friends. He will be truly missed by his family and friends who loved him dearly. James always made people smile with his presence.

James is survived by his children, Kimberly Hammer wife of Michael Hammer, Sr., of Windsor, and James P. Kaufhold III. fiancé of Tracy Rettig, of Columbia; 3 grandchildren, Michael Hammer, Jr. husband of Mary Ellen Hammer, of Wrightsville, Codey Hammer husband of Viktoria Hammer, of Wrightsville and Sean Garbey husband of Brittany Garbey, of Lititz; his brothers, Leo, Mike, Greg, Joe and his sister, Floss. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marion of 50+ years and his brother William.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, November 3, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. from Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry Street, Columbia, PA with Rev. Fr. Daniel Mitzel, Celebrant. Donald "Granny" Arndt, 73, of Columbia, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on October 25th. He was born on March 8th,1950 to the late Harry Arndt and Audrey Taylor Arndt.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Tracy Wile Arndt, two children, Jamie Scott Arndt and Holly Lynn Arndt, granddaughter, Kali Ann Arndt, and sister, Delores Buchanan. He was predeceased by his sister, Betty Grove.

Granny, a 1968 Columbia High School graduate, proudly served his country from 1969-1976 in The National Guard and Army Reserve (SPEC 5).  He was employed at Fabral Inc. for 51 years, and recently, in October of 2023, the Fabral Inc. of Lancaster building had been renamed to "The Donald 'Donnie' Arndt Manufacturing Facility".

 He was an avid Penn State football fan and a member of Chickies Rock Moose, The Lions Club, Sunsnappers, Columbia-Middletown Elks, Columbia VFW, Columbia American Legion, Blue White Mountain Lodge, and St. John's Lutheran Church.  Don, beloved by many friends, family, co-workers and community, was also a Columbia Boys Athletic Association basketball coach and a Columbia High School girls’ basketball coach.

His memory will live on and he will be missed. 

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. from St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sixth and Locust Streets, Columbia, PA with Rev. Richard Whitesel, officiating.  A visitation with the family will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.  The family request that flowers be omitted. Martin P. Daly, 84, of St. Anne’s Retirement Community passed away of natural causes on Monday, October 9, 2023.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, he graduated from St. Peter's Preparatory School in Jersey City, NJ in 1957 and subsequently earned a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Detroit in 1962, followed by a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a specialization in hydraulics from Northwestern University and a second Master’s degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on environmental engineering from New York University. Marty honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Marty was the beloved husband of the late Mary Ann Daly, whom he married on February 19, 1966 and who predeceased him on May 23, 2022.

Certified as a Professional Engineer in several Mid-Atlantic states, Marty was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and by engineering firms in Pennsylvania, Virginia, and New Jersey, with responsibilities for regional water supply, transmission, distribution, and treatment. Mid-career, he and his family moved temporarily to Amman, Jordan, where he was resident project manager in the area of water resources for the city of Zarqa.

Marty is survived by his daughters, Fayanne Hooning (John) of Evergreen, CO and Catherine Wimpsett (Wessley) of York, PA, and by his son, Joseph Daly (Mary Frances) of Alexandria, VA, as well as by his five grandchildren, Johnny and Jake Hooning and James, Henry, and William Daly. He is also survived by his sisters, Lucille Vergano of Mount Arlington, NJ and Elizabeth McGrory (Jack Dempsey) of Greenville, SC.

A man who loved his family and his country; Ranger pride ran through every choice he made. 

 

On Friday, October 6th, 2023 Bruce Edward Donaldson was called home by his lord and savior. The second son of Geraldine and Patrick Isenbarger.

Survived by long-time partner Laretha Kraft; siblings Robert & Lea Donaldson, Roger & Mary Isenbarger, and Kathy & James Hogan; children Christopher Donaldson, James Donaldson, Monica Bollinger, and Todd Donaldson; and grandchildren Noah & Jarrod Bollinger, Gabriel, Lucia, and Christian Donaldson. 

Retired Army Ranger, Skypilot, as he was more commonly known, served 21 years. A proud Vietnam Veteran he earned the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, a Bronze Star Medal, and a Purple Heart among many other commendations.

After his esteemed military career, Skypilot went to both work for and eventually retire from the United States Postal Service.  He was a life member of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club. A man who loved his family and his country; Ranger pride ran through every choice he made.

Jerome O. “Romie” Burg, Jr., 61, of East Prospect passed away on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy surrounded by his loving family.

He was the husband of Beth with whom he would have celebrated 27 years of marriage this month. Jerome was born in Columbia to Jerome, Sr. and Janet Kriner Burg. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by his son, Travis M. Burg; Travis’ fiancée, Brianna Spencer; his brother, Steven Burg; and his best friend and brother-in-law, Harry Witmer, with whom he shared his love of music. 

Jerome was a 1979 graduate of Eastern High School where he was voted “best smile”. He had too many hobbies to list, but enjoyed photography, fishing, wood working and cooking.  Jerome will be missed every day.
