Alfred “Fred” C. Palmer, 79, of Long Level, Wrightsville passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at his home on January 10th, 2021. He was born in Columbia to the late Clark Dean Palmer and Irene Clara Ackerman. Fred was a graduate of Columbia High School and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he began a career as an independent long haul truck driver and amassed more than three million miles of driving. Fred was also a lifetime Mason and avid outdoorsman who was a member of the Susquehanna Fish and Game and American Legion Post 469. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Columbia. He was affectionately known as “Pop” to his family. May he rest in peace.

Fred leaves behind his children, Ryan E. Cover of Mountville, Mitchell E. Cover of Lancaster, and Stefanie L. Margolis of Long Level, Wrightsville; his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Rita Palmer in 2013.

Ruth Kremer Leader, 86, of Lancaster passed away on January 11th, 2021. She was born in Sunbury to the late Jacob and Mary Weaver Kremer. Ruth worked for AT&T as a telephone operator for many years until her retirement. She was an art enthusiast who enjoyed going to musicals and watching the Hallmark Channel. Ruth was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Nationals, and Philadelphia Phillies fan. She also loved to travel, especially to Rockport Maine. Ruth was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lancaster.

Ruth leaves behind her son, John, husband of Melissa Leader of Lancaster; her granddaughters, Jenn Leader of Lancaster and Kristen Lewis of Washington Boro. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Chester Leader in 2009 and four siblings.

Jeffrey A. "Jeff" McMillen, Sr., 60, of Columbia, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes Saturday, January 9, 2021 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Marie Romano McMillen with whom was married 24 years until her death in 2009. Born in Columbia, he was the son of Madeline Sheckart Brown and the late Robert Brown.

Jeff graduated from Columbia High School in 1978 and for the past 35 years he was the owner of the Midway Collision shop in Columbia. Jeff was known for his big personality, and even more so, his big heart. He was loved and will be missed by many.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his son, Jeffrey A. McMillen, Jr. husband of Carolyn McMillen and their son Isaiah Jeffrey McMillen; sisters, Julie, wife of Mark Kaufman; Diane, wife of Ed Bernard; Robin Brown, and a brother, Thomas, husband of Diana Brown.

Over the years, Melinda was employed by American General Insurance Company, K-Mart, and most recently QVC. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Larry J. Curry, Jr. husband of Abigail and their children, Chase and Savannah, and her sister, Marylou, wife of Robert Haldeman.

She is survived by her companion of 16 years, Samuel C. Edye; children, Kayla M., wife of Richard E. Sharp III and Dillian M. Edye; grandchildren, Samantha, Richard E. IV and Kyli. Her brothers, Richard E. Stiffler; David C. Stiffler and sisters, Patty Ann Alvelo; Deb Swift and Stephanie, wife of Chuck Heath also survive. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Michael, Ronnie, Sandy and Sue.

He was born in Lancaster to the late Lester and Pearl Kurtz Kreider and attended Paradise High School where he played varsity basketball. Robert proudly served in the United States Army and Army Reserves and then worked as a block and brick mason at Kinzer Block Plant until his retirement in 2003. Following his retirement, he worked part time for MK Builders until 2019. 

Robert leaves behind his children, Robert, Jr. husband of Cathy of Lancaster, Sharon Bair of Columbia, Ron, husband of Rebekah of Columbia; eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren; a sister, Nancy McCauley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Meshey Kreider in 2007; a daughter, Stacy Kreider; two siblings, Betty Miller and Dawn Prevost.

Harriet L. Long, 92, of Columbia, passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2020. She was the wife of the late Russell L. Long who preceded her in death in 2001. Born in Drumore Township, Lancaster PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Zink Trimble.

Harriet was employed as a private housekeeper for the Kegal family of Lancaster for over 30 years. Harriet and Russ enjoyed vacations with family members at the shore. She enjoyed many tasty desserts, her home was always spotless, she enjoyed telling a funny joke and could solve a Wheel of Fortune puzzle faster than the participants on the show.

She was child number 14 of 16 and is survived by one sister-in-law and one brother-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her greatly.

LeRoy D. Fals, 89, of Wrightsville, passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2020 at the Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Toledo, OH, he was the son of the late Perlee C. and Willie Jones Fals.

LeRoy retired from Conrail in 1993 after 40 years of service where he employed as train engineer. He was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Columbia and was a 42-year member of Lodge 286 F&AM, Wrightsville where he received his Master Mason, in May 1978 and served as past Lodge Chaplain. LeRoy enjoyed spending time on the Susquehanna River boating and spending time on the sandbar.

He is survived by his son, Tim, husband of Carol Fals; three grandchildren, Lindsay Kline; Courtney Fals; Kristy, wife of Jordan Hood; two great-grandchildren, Brea Hood, Brantleigh Fals and a sister, Eula Higgenbothem.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, a private service will be held in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens with the Rev. J. Patrick Peters, officiating, at the convenience of the family. Alfred G. Stewart, 63, of York passed away surrounded by his adoring family on Christmas Day 2020. He was born in Fort Leonard Wood, MO to the late Charles and Anna Zivic Stewart. Alfred attended and graduated from Hempfield High School before studying welding at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center in Mount Joy. He began SWF Industrial out of a one car garage which then grew to include over one hundred employees that were like family to him. Alfred was extremely hard working and loyal. He had a love for creating new things. Enjoyed nature as well as a passion for science that included astronomy, meteorology, and aviation; which led to him acquiring his pilot’s license. Alfred was a loving father, grandfather, and brother who treasured spending time with his family.

Alfred leaves behind his children, Jennifer, wife of Brandon Stanchock of Hellam, Angela, wife of Ryan Hess of Landisville, Monica, wife of Matt Bowman of Mount Joy, Brad Stewart of York; his step daughter, Erika Bryson of York; five grandchildren, Alexis, Aiden, Caleb, Ariana, and Avery; three siblings, Rosie, Don, and Willy; his canine companion, Maisy. Alfred’s children looked up to their dad with tons of love and respect. They will miss his strength, perseverance, stubbornness, love, sense of humor and his laughter. He will always remain in their hearts.

Lois F. Becker, 87, of 26 Lorraine Avenue, Marietta, PA passed away at her residence on December 27, 2020. She was the wife of the late John E. Becker who preceded her in death in 2005. Born in Mount Joy, PA she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Herr Rider.

She was last employed in the flu department of Wyeth Labs. Lois had a very strong faith in her Lord and Savior. She was one of the most loving, giving and caring people and there was no one who met her who didn't love her. She loved working in her yard and loved watching birds.

Surviving is a son, John H. husband of Elizabeth Graham Becker, of Columbia; and a daughter, Lois F. wife of Michael Albert, of Wrightsville; 5 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter. Also surviving is a sister, Geraldine Wetzel, of Mount Joy. Lois was preceded in death by her siblings: Ruth Naomi, Anna Mary, Betty and Kenneth.

A Life Celebration for Lois will be held from the New Path Community Church, 22 West Main Street, Mount Joy, PA on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. (VIEWING: 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.) with Pastor Kenneth Schoonover and Rev. Michael Albert officiating. Interment will be in Mount Joy Camp Hill Cemetery.

Marlyn proudly served his country aboard the U.S.S Coral Sea from 1945 thru 1949.

Due to Covid-19 concerns, a private viewing and graveside service with full military honors will be held in the Salunga Mennonite Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

Marlyn C. Kauffman, Sr., 92, of Lititz, formerly of Columbia, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 at the Elizabethtown Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was the husband of Elizabeth Hartman Maust Kauffman with whom he was married 29 years. Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Earl and Edna (Kauffman) Kauffman. A U.S Navy veteran, he proudly served his country aboard the U.S.S Coral Sea from 1945 thru 1949. He retired after 35 years of service from the former ITT Grinnell Corporation. Marlyn was a lifetime member of the AMVETS, Columbia and a member of the former Shawnee Fire Company and Columbia Fire Company #1.

In addition to his wife are his children, Marlyn C., Jr. husband of Doreatha Kauffman; Dale Kauffman; Dianne, wife of Bob Frady; step children, Debra, wife of Robert Klink and Vicki Maust fiancée of Kenny Lease. Many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive. He was the last of his immediate family having being preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Due to Covid-19 concerns, a private viewing and graveside service with full military honors will be held in the Salunga Mennonite Cemetery at the convenience of the family. James was self employed in the construction industry.

James Morrissey, 68, of Columbia passed away on December 20th, 2020. He was born in Manhattan, NY to the late Frank and Christine Morrissey and was self employed in construction.

James leaves behind his wife of 40 years Donna Morrissey; four children, Donna, James, Tina, and Tiffany; seven grandchildren, Hope, Faith, Codey, Kyle, Andrew, Maddison, and Brooklyn.

At this time there will be no services for James and any future services will be announced by his family.

Donald W. Smeltzer, 78, of Lancaster, passed away on December 22, 2020 at the Abington Jefferson Hospital, Abington, PA. He was the husband of Jolene Miller Smeltzer with whom he was married 56 years. Born in Martinsburg, PA, he was the son of the late Wilbert and Ruth Shriver Smeltzer.

Don graduated in 1961 from Central High School, Martinsburg, PA and retired in 1995 after 32 years of service from the former Kerr Glass, Inc., Lancaster where he was employed as an injection molder.

He enjoyed tinkering around the house and watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies, along with rooting for Penn State.

In addition to his wife Jolene are his children, Sharon, wife of James Frey; Julie, wife of Noel Linares; Kelly, wife of Paul Russell; Shelly, wife of Harry Yarnall; James, husband of Crystal Smeltzer; seven grandchildren, Michael, Meghan, Brendon, Mackenzie, Savannah, Delaney and Ashton; four great-grandchildren, Bentley, Jadis, Aiden and Brooklynn. His brother, John, husband of Dianne Smeltzer also survives. He was preceded in death by his four siblings, Anna Mary, Phyllis, Peggy and Bill.

In keeping with Don's wishes and world events surrounding Covid-19, a private viewing and service will be held at the convenience of the family. He will be laid to rest in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens.
