Edward Gene McKain, 57, of Washington Boro passed away February 23rd, 2020. He was born in Columbia to Dollie and the late Robert McKain and was a lifelong resident of this area. 'Eddie' worked in farming for years and had many in town little shop odd jobs. He enjoyed Susquehanna riverfront hikes, visiting North Carolina and Florida beaches with family, and the mountains of Potter County. Eddie also liked to go antiquing and visiting yard sales. He loved animals, especially dogs.

Eddie leaves behind his mother, Dollie McKain of Columbia; six siblings, Steve McKain of Lancaster, Deb, wife of Dale Zimmerman of Mount Joy, Bobby, husband of Cathy McKain of Elizabethtown, twin sister – Sharon, wife of Bob Vickers of Pequea, Jim McKain of Columbia, Barb McKain of Columbia; several nieces and nephews and a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his father.

A celebration of Eddie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 7th, 2020 at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, 519 Walnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. Tami L. Scherrer, 58, of Columbia, passed away on February 20, 2020 at home. She was the wife Michael N. Scherrer with whom she was married ten years. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Allen Trimble and Betty Lewis Trimble.

A graduate of Penn Manor High School, Class of 1979, Tami was a volunteer with the Hands Across the Street program in Columbia, enjoyed the polar plunges at the Susquehanna River, and was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan. She also loved being in the company of her family, particularly her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents are her daughters, Amberlee Wagner (Travis); Brittany Trimble (Randy Cooper); six grandchildren; sister, Robin Shover (William) and brother Michael Trimble (Justy).

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2020 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the American Legion Post 372, 329 Chestnut St., Columbia, PA 17512. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Tami's memory to Hands Across the Street, 360 Locust St., Columbia, PA 17512.

Catherine was a people person who never met a stranger and always put others first

Catherine Draper, 73, of Columbia passed away on February 17th, 2020. She was born in Cropwell, AL to Cornelia and the late Rufus Love and lived for many years in Columbia. Catherine worked for Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories where she was a machine inspector and trainer. She absolutely loved her job and retired after 23 years. Catherine was a people person who never met a stranger and always put others first. She enjoyed baking and made all of her cakes from scratch. Catherine was a God-fearing woman and member of Ashley Tabernacle in Columbia.

Catherine leaves behind her mother,  Cornelia Love of Cropwell, AL; her children, Lucretia “Trish” Love of Gadsden, AL, Milledge “Bo” Draper, III of Columbia; three grandchildren, Gregory Love, Caleb Walton, Cyrus Zenkowich; seven sisters, Sarah Oden of Columbia, Tribble Maurer of Harrisburg, Beverly Hall of York, Mona Love of Gadsden, AL, Barbara Love of Buffalo, NY, Laverne Curry of Cropwell, AL, Connie Stockdale of Copperas Cove, TX; two brothers, James Love of Cropwell, AL, Leroy Love of Buffalo, NY; several nieces and nephews and a large extended family. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harkman Love.

Services for Catherine will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 25th, 2020 at St. Paul’s Baptist Church, 297 S. 5th St, Columbia, PA 17512. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens. Isaac "Bud" Harlan Miller

Bud enjoyed public sales and loved all animals.

Isaac “Bud” Harlan Miller, 82, of Columbia passed away on February 18th, 2020. He was born in Lost River, WV to the late Hazel Miller and had lived in the area for many years. Bud worked in farming and printing which he retired from. He then worked at the Turkey Hill Dairy until his final retirement. Bud was a Scout Master for many years of Pack 151. He enjoyed public sales and loved all animals.

Bud leaves behind his wife of 28 years, Kay Breon Miller of Columbia; his children, Kimberly, wife of the late Jeffry Heindel of Columbia, James Miller of Lakeland, FL, Jeffrey Miller of Columbia, Donald, husband of Angie Miller of Washington Boro, Melissa, wife of Bobby Gillenwater of Washington Boro; four step children; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. 

Services for Bud will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 at Washington Boro United Methodist church, 1964 Water St, Washington Boro, PA 17582. Virginia “Ginny” Evans Groom, 77, of Columbia passed away on February 14th, 2020. She was born in Columbia to the late Nelson and Martha Evans and was a lifelong resident of Columbia. Ginny was a graduate of Columbia High School with the Class of 1961.


Ginny leaves behind her companion of 42 years, Joe Peters of Columbia; her sisters, Laura Manley of Woodlyn, PA and Sally Doutt of Ephrata; her nieces and nephew, Elizabeth Manley (Cheryl) of Woodlyn, Barbara Foley (Steve) of Mount Laurel, NJ, Amy Lloyd (Clayton) of Ephrata, Brian Doutt (Kelly) of Ephrata. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her nephew Jason Doutt.


A celebration of Ginny’s life will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 22nd, 2020 at the American Legion Post 372, 329 Chestnut St, Columbia, PA 17512. Thomaseen O. Misel, 65, of 1020 Park Ave., Columbia, PA died unexpectedly at her residence on February 10, 2020. Born in Columbia, PA she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elsie Lockard Oberholtzer. She retired from Lancaster General Hospital in the Transcription department where she was employed for 40 years. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

Surviving are 2 sons: Mike husband of Tia Misel of Columbia, PA and Matthew husband of Jessica Misel of Lancaster, PA. Also surviving is a sister: Karen wife of Dennis Fischer of Columbia, PA and a brother: Joseph husband of Cindy Geesey of Lititz, PA, and 5 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister: Judy Heisey.

A Celebration of Thomaseen's Life will be held from the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc., 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Tuesday, February 18, 2020 at 11:00AM (VISITATION: 10:00 AM–11:00 AM) with Rev. Mark Kopp officiating. Barb worked as a registered nurse in private practice medicine for many years.

Barbara C. Obin, 79, of Columbia, PA, formerly of York and Downingtown, passed away on February, 3, 2020 at York Hospital. She was the wife of Andrew S. Obin, Jr. whom she married on June 16, 1962. Born in her home in Haddon Heights, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Dr. John and Bertha Volk Canal.

A graduate of Thomas Jefferson School of Nursing, Barb worked as a registered nurse in private practice medicine for many years. After retirement, she was employed as a seamstress by the Perform Group in East Prospect, PA. She was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Columbia and a lay member of Our Lady's Missionaries of the Eucharist.

Barb loved being outdoors, enjoying nature, sports, and fishing. Also, she enjoyed playing the flute and was a member of the West Chester Alumni Band. She will be remembered for her strong dedication to family and prayer. She will be greatly missed and forever loved.

She is survived by her husband Andy, their daughter, Michele Obin; their son, Jeffrey, husband of Gina Marie Obin; grandsons, Gregory and Anthony Obin; brother, John, husband of Elizabeth Canal.

The family will receive friends at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc., 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA 17512 on Friday, February 14, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. On the following day, Saturday, February 15, 2020, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, PA 17512, Visitation: 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be held at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Elizabeth Joanne Shillow

Joanne was a devoted member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Columbia, PA.

Elizabeth Joanne Shillow, 89, entered into rest on February 5th, 2020 after a brief illness at Masonic Village where she resided for the past six years. Born in Marietta, Pennsylvania, “Joanne” was the daughter of the late John Anthony Shillow and Sarah Elizabeth Hook Shillow.


After her graduation from Columbia High School, “Joanne” was employed by the Marietta Depot for over ten years, followed by employment as a teller at Dauphin Deposit Bank and Trust Company, and ending with a secretarial position at Wyeth Labs. Joanne was a devoted member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Columbia, PA.

Joanne is survived by two brothers: Joseph, married to Marie Dinkel Shillow; Patrick, married to Sandra Shillow; and sister-in-law, Mary Anne Fischer Shillow. She was preceded in death by the following brothers: John, James, and Edward; her sisters, Mary Shillow Carmichael and Margaret Shillow Elliot. Joanne will be lovingly missed by her 19 surviving nieces and nephews who she loved as her own children. The family would like to thank the staff at Masonic Village for the kind and compassionate care they provided her.



A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, February 10th, 2020 at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 121 S. 2nd St, Columbia, PA 17512. The family will receive friends for visitation on Sunday, February 9th, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Clyde W. Betty Lou Houck, 76, of Marietta, passed away on Monday, February 10, 2020 at home. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Henrietta Joe Hershey.

A seamstress for decades in the Paradise, Lancaster County area, Betty was employed at QVC for the past 20 years where she worked in inventory control. She will be remembered as a generous and caring person, who enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling, especially to points out west with Branson, MO one of her favorites. She also was an avid Lancaster Barnstormers fan.

Betty is survived by two sons: Norman L. Houck, Pensacola, FL; Raymond E. Houck, Narvon; grand dog, "Mack"; sisters, Nancy E. wife of Richard Grossman, Ronks and Raynea, wife of Jeffrey Whitehead, Elizabethtown. She was preceded in death by her sister, Susan F. Semple.

A Celebration of Betty's Life will be held on Friday, February 21, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the banquet room of the Oregon Dairy, 2900 Oregon Pike, Lititz, PA 17543. At the request of the family, please consider memorial contributions to the Lancaster Literacy Council or to the Humane league of Lancaster County.

Robert L. Williams

Bob was an active and devoted member of the Columbia United Methodist Church.

Robert L. Williams, 90, of Columbia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 2, 2020 at the Masonic Village, Elizabethtown. He was the husband of the late Mary Jane (Freeland) Williams, with whom he was married 62 years until her death in 2016. Born in Shenandoah Heights, Schuylkill County, he was the son of the late Robert Peel and Mable Carmitchell Williams.

Along with his brother, Charles, he was part of a second generation to own and operate the former R.P. Williams and Sons, Inc. for 67 years. Bob was an active and devoted member of the Columbia United Methodist Church; served as a Lay Leader of the church for 15 years; head of the Youth Department for 34 years; sang in the church choir and was active in the Christ Servant Ministry. In addition, Bob served on the Administration Board and the Pastor Parish Relations Committee.

An active member of the Free and Accepted Masons for 70 years, he was the oldest member of the Columbia Blue Lodge, oldest High Priest of the Chapter, Commander of the Commandery, and member of the Zembo Shrine.

He is survived by his sons, Mark, husband of Pamela (Wilt) Williams; John, husband of Marie (Lutz) Williams; grandsons, Gregory, John; granddaughters, Amy, Lauren, Renee; great-granddaughters, Tella, Emme, Lulu, Lila, and Grace. His brother, Charles ‘Chuck" husband of Ruth Ann (Vogt) Williams, also survives. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Williams.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the Columbia United Methodist Church, 510 Walnut St., Columbia, PA 17512. Burial will follow in Mount Bethel Cemetery. Friends may view at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service. Kindly omit flowers. Sister Marian Russo, ASC, 76, passed away on February 1, 2020 in Ruma, IL. Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of Marian Strenck Steele and the late Gaston Strenck. She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Harold Steele.

Sister Marian made her first profession as an Adorer of the Blood of Christ in St. Joseph's Convent, Columbia in 1968 and given her religious name as Sister Mary Sebastian. Her ministries included primary school teacher, business class teacher at St. Joseph's Academy, secretarial assignments, administration assistant and convent archivist.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her brother, Arthur Russo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Chapel of St. Anne's Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia, PA 17512 on Friday, February 7, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the adjoining convent cemetery. A brief service and recitation of the Rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m. If desired, contributions to the ASC Retirement Fund, 4233 Sulphur Ave., St. Louis, MO 63109 (www.adorers.org) in Sister Marian's memory would be deeply appreciated.

Dennis M. Fritz, 73, of York passed away surrounded by his loving family on January 31st, 2020. He was born in Lancaster to the late Lester and Bernice Fritz and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Dennis attended Columbia High School and graduated from Hempfield High School with the Class of 1964. He proudly served in the United States Navy during Vietnam. Dennis was the former owner of his own company Fabbco before becoming the general manager of Formit Metals. He also was a member of the Mountville Lions Club and the Mountville Fire Company. Dennis enjoyed being outdoors, visiting the beach, and treasured spending time with his family. He was known to always put everyone else first.


Dennis leaves behind his wife of 52 years, Freda Fritz of York; his son Todd, husband of Ellie Fritz of York; three grandchildren, Casey Fritz of Traverse City, MI, Zachary Fritz, and Samantha Fritz both of York; his sister, Deborah McCallin of Dover; his grand-dog, Banner; many friends and family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Chuck Fritz.

Wayne A. DeVan

Wayne adored his family and treasured spending time with them, especially at Virginia Beach.

Wayne Alan DeVan, 68, of Landisville passed away on January 29th, 2020. He was born in Windber, PA to the late John, Jr. and Elizabeth DeVan.

Wayne proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during Vietnam. Following his service, he attended and earned his undergraduate from Penn State University before earning his Master’s Degree, with honors, from Virginia Tech.

Following his education, Wayne became the Director of Public Works for Elizabethtown Boro and served in that role for 42 years until his retirement in June of 2019. He was an avid Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers fan and was known to be an excellent craftsman with a gift for woodworking. Wayne was a faithful member and volunteer at Mount Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church. He adored his family and treasured spending time with them, especially at Virginia Beach.


Wayne leaves behind his wife of almost 34 years, Sherri DeVan of Landisville; his daughters, Kari, wife of Douglas Prendergast of Doylestown, Mallaree DeVan of Landisville; his step-son, David, husband of Michelle Turnquist of California; three grandchildren, Haelee, Emma, and Chloee; his brother, John, husband of Sally DeVan of Virginia Beach, VA; mother-in-law, Shirley Koehler of Hastings, NE; sister-in-law, Lori Koehler of Lincoln, NE; brother-in-law, Jim Bedois of Virginia Beach, VA; several nieces and nephews and a large group of family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Elsie Jean Debois.


A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 1st, 2020 at Mount Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church, 308 Petersburg Rd, Lititz, PA 17543. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. He will be laid to rest in the church’s urn garden.

Irvin Witmer, Jr.

Irvin enjoyed woodworking in the wood-shop at Masonic Village.

Irvin Witmer, Jr., 87, formerly of Manor Township, passed away on January 24, 2020 at Masonic Village where he had resided for the past 15 years. He was the husband of Mary Stoner Witmer; they were married on May 9, 1953. Born in Manor Township, he was the son of the late Irvin D. and Elizabeth Bongart Witmer.

He retired after 40 years of service from the Atlantic Richfield (Sunoco) Company where was employed as a truck driver. After retirement, Irvin worked for Elite Coach as a tour bus driver and for the Manheim Auto Auction. He graduated from the Manor-Millersville High School in 1951 and was member of the F & AM, Lodge #236 where he was a 32nd degree Mason. In addition, he a was a member of the Mountville Lions Club and enjoyed woodworking in the woodshop at Masonic Village.

Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Carol, wife of Harry Bechtold, Jr.; Cathy, wife of Dean Putt; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a sister, Betty Hoch. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Harry Bechtold, III and his sister, Leonora Groff Herrington.

Funeral services will be held at the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc. 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jan Latshaw officiating. Private interment will be held in the Habecker Mennonite Cemetery. Family and friends may view on Saturday one hour prior to the service.

Lena B. Atkins, 96, of Lititz passed away on January 25th, 2020. She was born in Clymer, PA to the late Albert and Martha Shank and was a graduate of Clymer High School with the Class of 1941. Lena loved her home on the Menoher Highway in Johnstown, PA, where she and her husband raised their three children.

Lena then moved to Lancaster County in 2003 following the death of her husband Charles L. Atkins. She lived at the St. John’s Herr Estate for a number of years before spending her final years at Luther Acres. Lena enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and helping others through her volunteering. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who treasured spending time with her family. Lena was a member of Westmont Church of the Brethren and the Menoher Heights Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary.


Lena leaves behind her children, Karen, wife of Ronald Michnya of Landisville; Larry, husband of Ramona Atkins of Charlotte, NC; Walter, husband of Denise Atkins of Johnstown, PA; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Dale Shank and Ada Stiger.


A celebration of Lena’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8th, 2020 in the Chapel at Luther Acres, 600 E. Main St, Lititz, PA 17543. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. until service time. She will be laid to rest at a later date in Pine Flats Cemetery in Indiana County, PA. In lieu of flowers, an act of kindness can be made to someone in need in Lena’s memory. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice & Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17604.

Elanor J. Eckert, 89, formerly of Mountville, passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2020 at St. Anne's Retirement Community where she had resided since April 2019. She was the wife of the late George W. Eckert, Jr. with whom she was married for 67 years until his death in 2017. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Krushinski Horn.

Elanor retired after many years of service from the office of the Harold E. Smith Company, Lancaster. She was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Columbia. She will be remembered by her family as a vibrant loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved to dance and being in the company of her family and friends.

Elanor is survived by her daughter, Brenda L. Henry; son-in law, Gregory K. Wagner husband of Vicki; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Richard Horn and his wife Rita. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cindy J. Wagner and siblings, John and Cletus Horn, Julia Divet and M. Ruth Shenberger.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 409 Cherry St., Columbia, PA 17512 on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Stephen P. Kelley, Celebrant. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. Family and friends may view at the church one hour prior to the mass. Doris Fay Trussell of Mennonite Home Community Lancaster passed away peacefully in the early hours of Thursday January 16, 2020. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Dick.

Born in Gettysburg to J. Marshall Cleveland and Gladys Cleveland, she was the eldest of five siblings.

Doris was a proud retiree of AMP Inc. with over 25 years of service. Doris was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lancaster for many years and spent much time volunteering with many charitable organizations such as Alpha Club of Lancaster and the Water Street Rescue Mission.

A published poet, Doris filled her time at Mennonite Home writing and reflecting on life.

She and Dick enjoyed extensive travel, visiting such countries as Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, England, France as well as a trip sponsored by Radio Beijing, to mainland China in the early 80's.

She is survived by two children, a son, David C., husband of Dannielle (Leeds) Trussell of Landisville, Pa; and a daughter, Diana; two grandsons, Eric D. Trussell of Lebanon, Pa., and Brian T. Trussell of East Petersburg, Pa. and 3 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister Phyllis Smith of Michigan and a brother Gerald Cleveland of Florida.

There will be a private family gathering but memorial donations can be made in Doris's memory to the Mennonite Home Benevolent Fund at 1520 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, Pa. 17601.

Justin Scott Bell, 31, of Marietta passed away suddenly on January 22nd, 2020. He was born in Columbia to Tony Bell and Colleen Geesey and was a lifelong resident of this area.

Justin was known for being a talented carpenter and artist. He enjoyed his music, gaming, and tattooing. Justin was a loving father, son, brother, and uncle who treasured spending time with his family.


Justin leaves behind his parents, Colleen, wife of Colby Geesey of Columbia, Tony Bell, companion of Esther Lefever of Columbia; his children, Zander Scott Bell, Tyler Taylor, and Kayleigh Brubaker all of Red Lion; his siblings, Kyle, husband of Carrie Grove of Columbia, Amanda, wife of Billy Knight of Marietta, Brett, husband of Kayla Geesey of Columbia, Aireanna Hawkins of Columbia; his nieces and nephews, Zoey, Sophia, Caroline, Cayden, Declan, Jace; his grandparents, Agnes and Mick Wright, Audrey and Wayne Nau all of Columbia.

David M. Misel, 65 of 425 N. Duke St., Lancaster, PA passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at the Rose City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Columbia, PA he was the son of Harry and Margaret Glatfelter Misel. David was employed in the Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning business.

He is survived by sons: Mike Misel of Columbia and Matthew Misel of Lancaster, PA and a daughter: Kate Misel of Lancaster, PA. Also surviving are sisters: Donna Hill and Linda Grove both of Columbia, PA., Peggy Shenberger of Washington Boro, PA and Nancy Forbes of Millersville, PA. He was predeceased by a Sister: Rita Schaeffer.

A Celebration of David's Life will be held from the Clyde W. Kraft Funeral Home, Inc. 519 Walnut St., Columbia, PA on Friday, January 24, 2020 at 11:00AM with Rev. Mark Kopp officiating.
